About the Road to Rachel
'Rachel' refers to the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge (RCTC), named after the landmark conservationist and author of Silent Spring. The RCTC is an annual hiking challenge in the Pittsburgh, PA, that pushes participants to complete an arduous 37-mi course in a single day.
Kyle Giest learned of the challenge when he moved to Pittsburgh from Gainesville for treatment of stage IV pediatric cancer, Ewing Sarcoma, in 2022. He found training for the RCTC helped confront the physical and mental challenges of undergoing cancer treatment.
This year, he is training for the challenge again and fundraising for two organizations close to his heart, Pittsburgh Cure Sarcoma (PCS) and Young Adult Survivors United (YASU), on The Road to Rachel. PCS funds cancer researchers making advances in the treatment of sarcoma and YASU supports the lives of young adults diagnosed with cancer.
Kyle looks forward to visiting Gainesville for the first time since leaving, reconnecting with friends, and challenging cancer together on The Road to Rachel!
